Retaining Walls and Systems Across the South Metro, MN

Built for Minnesota. Built to last.

An engineered system that controls erosion, manages water, and turns unusable slope into yard you can actually use.

More than stacked block

Every wall we build is designed around your soil, your grade, and your drainage — not around whichever block is easiest to get.

We've spent 20+ years in Farmington solving grade changes, erosion, and water problems across the South Metro. We've also repaired enough failed walls to know exactly where corners get cut.

Build it once. Build it right.

Drainage Systems

Non-negotiable. The reason the wall is still straight in 20 years.

The most important part is the part you'll never see

Homeowners usually assume the block is the most important part of a retaining wall. It isn't. Long-term performance depends on everything hidden behind it.

Water is the biggest enemy of any wall. Trapped moisture creates hydrostatic pressure, and Minnesota's freeze–thaw cycles push that pressure against the wall until it leans, separates, or fails.

So we spend as much time building behind the wall as we do building the wall itself.

These components are never seen once the project is finished — but they're the reason a wall performs for decades.

Every wall includes
Proper excavation Compacted Class 5 aggregate base Clean, washed drainage stone behind the wall High-quality non-woven filter fabric Proper backfill material Perforated drain tile when required Drain outlets or wall vents where needed Geogrid reinforcement where specified Proper compaction throughout construction
Proper retaining wall cross section — wall blocks, compacted Class 5 aggregate base, leveling pad, non-woven geotextile fabric, clean washed angular drainage stone, perforated drain tile, native soil, plus material summary and key dimensions

Material summary
Base Material
Compacted Class 5 aggregate
Contains fines, compacts tightly, and provides a stable level foundation. 6"–12" thick typical.
Drainage Stone
¾" clean, washed, angular
No fines, so water drains freely — relieves hydrostatic pressure and extends the life of the wall.
Drain Tile
4" perforated pipe
Collects groundwater and reduces pressure. Must daylight to an outlet or tie into a drainage system.
Filter Fabric
Non-woven geotextile
Keeps soil from clogging the drainage stone while allowing water to pass. Never woven landscape fabric.
Key dimensions
12"
Minimum drainage stone behind the wall — 16" is optimal.
6"
Minimum base depth. Taller walls may need 8"–12"+.
4 ft
Above roughly this height, engineered plans are usually required.

Why walls fail — and how we prevent it

Almost every failure we're called out to repair traces back to a shortcut during installation — not the block.

No proper base material, or a base that’s too thin No drain tile No filter fabric, or the wrong type used Native soil used instead of drainage stone Drainage stone that doesn’t extend far enough Improper compaction during construction Freeze–thaw damage from trapped water
The bottom line

A retaining wall is an engineered system. Every component works together to control water, support loads, and withstand Minnesota's climate. When shortcuts are taken, the problems show up years after the project is complete.

Already have a wall that's leaning, bulging, or cracking? We'll evaluate it and explain the cause before recommending a fix.

Choosing the right wall system

Not all block is the same. Some systems excel at tall structural walls, others at tight radius work or stairs. We recommend the one that fits your site — not the one we install most.

Engineered walls

Walls over roughly four feet often require engineered plans, depending on local code, site conditions, and the loads the wall will carry. When engineering is required, we work with qualified engineers — we don't guess at it.

Built for Minnesota

Heavy clay soils, spring snowmelt, big rain events, and repeated freeze–thaw all put pressure behind a wall. Every wall we build follows manufacturer specs and industry best practice, because doing it right today prevents a rebuild later.

Natural stone options

Natural stone offers durability and character no manufactured product can duplicate. Every piece is made by nature, so every project ends up one of a kind.

We work with many of the Midwest's highest-quality stone products for retaining walls, steps, patios, outcroppings, and boulder walls.

Boulder retaining walls

Large landscape boulders create the most natural-looking wall available — extremely durable, low maintenance, and excellent on steep slopes. They blend into wooded lots and lakeshore properties where an engineered look isn't wanted.

Boulder walls need experienced equipment operators and more space than segmental block, because of the size of the stone.

Common questions

Retaining wall questions, answered

What is a retaining wall? +

A retaining wall is an engineered system built to hold back soil and manage the forces created by a change in elevation. It is much more than stacked concrete block. A properly built wall controls erosion, moves water away from the soil behind it, stabilizes slopes, and creates usable outdoor space. The block you see is only one part of a system that includes a compacted base, drainage stone, filter fabric, and drainage.

Why would I need a retaining wall on my property? +

Most homeowners add a retaining wall to solve a problem the yard has created on its own. Retaining walls stabilize steep slopes, prevent soil erosion, manage drainage and runoff, level difficult terrain, and protect driveways and foundations from soil movement. They also create usable yard space where the grade currently makes an area unusable, and they improve curb appeal and property value at the same time.

How long does a retaining wall last in Minnesota? +

A properly built retaining wall is designed to perform for decades, even in Minnesota's climate. Lifespan comes down to what was done behind and beneath the wall, not the block on the face. Walls built on a compacted Class 5 aggregate base, with clean drainage stone, non-woven filter fabric, and drain tile where required, hold up through repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Walls built without those components often start moving within a few years.

How much does a retaining wall cost in Minnesota? +

Retaining wall pricing depends on wall height, total square footage of wall face, soil conditions, drainage requirements, access for equipment, the wall system selected, and whether the wall requires engineering or geogrid reinforcement. A short garden wall and a tall structural wall on a clay slope are very different projects. We provide a firm number after walking the site, so you are comparing a real scope rather than a guess.

Do I need a permit to build a retaining wall in Minnesota? +

Permit requirements vary by city, and they usually depend on wall height and location on the property. Walls over roughly four feet in height commonly trigger permit and engineering requirements, but the exact threshold is set locally. We confirm requirements with your city before construction begins and coordinate the paperwork so nothing stalls the project or creates a problem at resale.

When does a retaining wall need to be engineered? +

As a wall gets taller, the forces pushing against it increase dramatically. Walls over approximately four feet in height often require engineered plans, depending on local building codes, site conditions, manufacturer specifications, and the loads the wall will carry. Surcharge loads such as a driveway, patio, or pool above the wall can lower that threshold. When engineering is required, we work with qualified engineers so the wall is designed for long-term structural performance.

What is geogrid and when does a retaining wall need it? +

Geogrid is a structural reinforcement material installed in layers behind the wall and locked into the block, extending back into the compacted backfill. It ties the wall to the soil mass behind it so the two work as one unit instead of the wall resisting the load alone. Taller walls, walls carrying loads above them, and walls in poor soils typically require it. Missing geogrid where the design calls for it is one of the most common causes of long-term wall movement.

Will a retaining wall add value to my home? +

A well-built retaining wall adds value in two ways. It protects the property by controlling erosion, managing runoff, and keeping soil away from driveways and foundations. It also adds usable, attractive outdoor living space, which is one of the features buyers notice first. A poorly built wall does the opposite, because a leaning or failing wall reads as a repair bill to any buyer or inspector.

What is the best time of year to build a retaining wall in Minnesota? +

Retaining walls are typically built from spring through late fall, once the ground has thawed and soil can be excavated and compacted properly. Frozen ground cannot be compacted correctly, and compaction is what keeps a wall from settling later. Because the building season is limited here, scheduling early in the year usually means more flexibility on start dates.

What areas do you build retaining walls in? +

Total Turf Maintenance is based in Farmington, Minnesota, and we build retaining walls for homeowners throughout the South Metro, including Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Lakeville, Rosemount, Savage, Shakopee, Prior Lake, Inver Grove Heights, and Hastings. We have spent more than 20 years solving grade changes, drainage issues, and erosion problems in this specific soil and climate, which matters more for wall performance than most homeowners expect.

Do you offer free retaining wall consultations? +

Yes. We visit your property, look at the grade, soil, and drainage conditions, explain your options, and recommend the retaining wall system best suited to your project rather than the one that is easiest to install. There is no pressure and no guesswork. Contact us to schedule your free consultation.

Do you warranty your retaining walls? +

Yes. Every retaining wall we build carries a 60 month workmanship warranty, because we stand behind the way we build. We are also a family owned company with more than 20 years of experience improving outdoor spaces and a proud recipient of the Better Business Bureau's 15 Year Award.

What makes Total Turf different from other retaining wall contractors? +

We build walls specifically for Minnesota's soils, drainage requirements, and freeze-thaw climate, and we follow manufacturer specifications and industry best practices on every project. That means proper excavation, compacted aggregate base, clean drainage stone, non-woven filter fabric, drain tile, drainage outlets, and reinforcement when required. We work across VERSA-LOK, Keystone Hardscapes, Belgard, and County Materials, so our recommendation is based on your property rather than one manufacturer.
